The moxa stick is used for dry heat therapy. In Chinese medicine it is practiced on acupuncture points. Moxa consists of mugwort, a therapeutic plant containing minerals and vitamins. It is dried, crushed and rolled into a stick shape. The therapist lights the moxa and then presents it, without contact, to the painful point. It allows it to burn until a local sensation of heat, redness and sweating appears. The heat released by the moxa acts as an infrared of a particular quality, very stimulating. This dry heat penetrates locally and deeply through the skin. It stimulates fluid circulation, increases cellular metabolism, reduces pain and relaxes tissues.
Therapists at the Massotrp clinic sometimes use it to help conditions such as tendinopathies, muscle contractures, stiffness….
If you prefer a humid heat then try the hydrocollator compresses.
